This article will give an explanation on how and why we use bus routing in Ableton sets.
Part 1: Terms
Part 2: Routing Tracks to the Bus
Before you start:
- It is important to download the [2024] Arrangement View Template
- How To: Build An Ableton Set
DISCLAIMER: This is all completed on the front end of each song. All routing will transfer into the Ableton Set the moment it is dragged into the template. Only refer to this if there is a need to change the routing of a song.
Part 1: Terms & Useful Key Commands
- Arrangement View : The Arrangement View displays the Arrangement, which contains music laid out along a song timeline, like a multitrack tape.
- Session View : A real-time-oriented “launching base” for clips. This will only be used to route the individual tracks to the busses easily.
- Return Tracks : tracks with the primary function of processing audio sent to them from numerous tracks.
- Send Controls : Controls how much of each tracks sends to the corresponding return track.
Key Commands
- Tab : Switch from Arrangement View to Session View and vice versa.
Part 2: Routing Tracks to the Bus
-
Step 1 : After building the Ableton set, navigate to Session View and open a song’s tracks folder.
- At the bottom of each channel there are circular “Send Controls”. This is what is used to send audio to the different busses.
-
Step 2 : Route each track to it’s designated “Return Track” or “Bus”
- Click + Drag Up the send control corresponding to the desired return track (i.e. send control “A” sends audio to the “A 1/2 Leads” return track).
->
- Step 3 : Repeat for each track/song.
